Brief: Driver Who Struck Triathlon Spectator Arrested for Vehicular Homicide

Jose Melendez of Estate Sion Farm was arrested Monday and charged with vehicular homicide in the May 2 death of Linton Gonzalez of Estate Strawberry Hill.
Criminal Investigation Bureau detectives arrested the 37-year-old Melendez based on an arrest warrant at 9:45 a.m. Monday. He also faces a charge of reckless driving. Bail was set at $10,000.
According to police reports, Gonzales, 63, was sitting on a guardrail on the Melvin Evans Highway just west of the Sunny Isles traffic signal watching the bike portion of the St. Croix Triathlon when the vehicle driven by Melendez hit the guardrail.
Gonzales was taken by ambulance to Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital for treatment but later died from his injuries.
