Man Dies Following Construction-Zone Traffic Accident

The man who was thrown out of the back of a pick-up truck following an accident on June 17 has died, according to officers of the Traffic Investigation Bureau.

A second accident victim remains in critical condition.

The accident occurred about 2:30 p.m. Thursday near a road construction site on Brookman Road in the area of Estate Charlotte Amalie. According to the Traffic officers, at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday a tan Camry ran into the back of a white Chevy truck which was stopped by a flag person near the construction site. A 50-year-old male passenger, a native of Haiti, was riding in the back of the truck and was ejected upon impact. He was taken by ambulance to the Roy L. Schneider Regional Medical Center and treated for serious head injuries. He died early Saturday morning. Police are withholding his name pending notification of next of kin.

The flag person was also struck by the Camry and was treated at the hospital. At the time police originally reported that hospital officials said the 29-year-old victim received superficial injuries; however his condition has since worsened. Police say the victim is presently in a coma in an off-island hospital.

The driver of the truck and the Camry were not injured.

Police have determined the 53-year-old driver of the Camry is a resident of the Virgin Islands. The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing. Police anticipate charges will be filed against the driver of the Camry.

Police caution motorists to obey all road signs and the directions of construction flag persons to avoid accidents and injury to construction workers and other motorists.
