Barge Hits Boat in Pillsbury Sound

The General II barge hit a small power boat early Monday, throwing the seven passengers aboard the power boat into Pillsbury Sound.
“They were taken out of the water and are safe,” U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Ricardo Castrodad said Wednesday.
The passengers were rescued by a “good Samaritan” in a boat, Castrodad said.
The barge transports vehicles between Red Hook, St. Thomas, and the Enighed Pond Marine Facility, located on the outskirts of Cruz Bay, St. John.
The small power boat didn’t sink. Castrodad said he didn’t have the exact size of the boat, but it was about 25 feet in length.
The barge suffered a scrape and remains in service, Castrodad said.
According to Castrodad, the Coast Guard did not have to launch a search-and-rescue effort because the passengers were already out of the water.
Castrodad said the Coast Guard received the report at 7:20 a.m. Monday, but the accident happened earlier that day. He did not have the exact time.
No one from Boyson Inc., which owns the General II, returned a call requesting comment.
