BVI’s East End Tap Dominates “Bway Ah Bway Classic”

BVI's East End Tap ran away in the featured 10th race. The British Virgin Islands’ East End Tap exploded at the top of the stretch in Sunday’s “Bway Ah Bway Bway Classic” to easily beat a field of the best V.I. horses by some five lengths.
With election season in full bloom, a plethora of candidates converged on the race track on Sunday with many of their supporters in tow.
This made what was already expected to be a large crowd easily the biggest at the track in years, and the stars of Sunday’s event made sure that everybody got a great show at the races.
From race one, fans stood and cheered and were still having a good time during race 11, which ran in the twilight.
Four of Tortola’s best thoroughbreds were supposed to travel to St. Croix for the classic, but only East End Tap and Bird Charm made the trip.
However, East End Tap proved that he was more than enough to represent his territory.
After breaking on top at the start of the race, jockey Christian Olmo Jr. took his horse back a bit allowing Formal King, Gallant Ruler and Lost River to take the field past the grandstand the first time around.
Into the clubhouse turn it was Formal King showing the way, with Gallant Ruler a close second, and East End Tap unhurriedly sitting in third. He was followed by Lost River and Temo’s Dream with Bird Charm bringing up the rear as the field entered the backstretch.
Midway down the backstretch, the field became bunched as everyone began getting into position for their run around the far turn. Lost River and Bird Charm started losing ground on the field, but the rest of the field looked set to give the fans a memorable stretch run.
However the memory that fans took away was the explosiveness of East End Tap at the top of the stretch as he and jockey Olmo Jr. let the rest of the field know that their battle would be for second place.
East End Tap ran away from the field, crossing the finish line well in hand in a pretty good time of 1:44.3. Formal King, with jockey Kevin Krigger in the irons, ran a good race and was just able to hold off a hard-charging Temo’s Dream for second place.
