Man Charged With Assaulting Woman with Hammer

St. Thomas police arrested 20-year-old Walki Mendez-Feliz and charged him with third-degree assault/domestic violence after he hit a woman with a hammer and a fire extinguisher, police said.
Police patrolling the area on Saturday observed a man running in the area and detained him. The man, later identified as Mendez-Feliz, led police to the apartment where a woman was found unresponsive on the floor. Emergency medical technicians transported her to the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital for treatment where she later regained consciousness.
The victim told police that she and Mendez-Feliz were previously involved in a romantic relationship and that he tried to break into her home. She said she tried to stop him. When the suspect got into the home he assaulted her by hitting her with a hammer, biting her and hitting her in the head with a fire extinguisher, according to police.
Mendez-Feliz was arrested at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday. He was held at the Bureau of Corrections without bail due to the domestic violence charges pending further court action.
