The Executive Council of the Association of Caribbean University, Research and Institutional Libraries (ACURIL) will hold its mid-year meeting Nov 11-14 on St. Croix. At this meeting, the 15-member council will be setting the theme, planning the topics, making a call for papers and establishing panel discussions for the annual general meeting that will be held in June 2011 in Tampa, Florida. Executive members will have a chance to visit the institutional libraries on St. Croix that hold membership in ACURIL. With institutional membership, the librarians and archivists within an institution are included in the activities of ACURIL.
The purpose of ACURIL is to establish close bonds with the various college and research libraries in the region. The organization encourages cooperation among these libraries. The general membership conferences focus on current issues that concern academic librarians and archivists. The organization is also interested in the services of the public libraries because in many Caribbean countries they function as the premier information system for the general population. ACURIL has been supportive of the rebuilding of libraries in Haiti and has worked together with other organizations in raising money for
that country’s library system.

Judith Rogers, a former member of the ACURIL executive council, and chair of the Information Technology special interest group, is the coordinator of the executive council meeting. The Information and Technology Services Unit of UVI, and the St. Croix Library Association, both ACURIL institutional members, have scheduled receptions and outings that will allow the library, literacy and archivist community on St. Croix to meet the members of the council and share experiences.
