V.I. Pace Runners Results: Bohlke and New Comer Take 10K Titles

Runners approach the 2-mile mark at Estate Rust Op Twist in the V.I. 10K Championships (V.I. Pace Runners photo) The Virgin Islands Pace Runners announced that a small field of runners took on the V.I. 10K Road Race Championships early Sunday morning on the scenic and rolling North Shore Road of St. Croix.
Billy Bohlke, multiple V.I. national record holder from 1500m to 5000m and V.I. National Team member in several regional and world championships, acknowledged his level of conditioning yet still managed to win the 6.2-mile race with a time of 41 minutes and 1 second. He climbed the first mile in 6:01 and averaged around six minutes per mile to the half-way point but slowed on the long climb from mile 4.5 to mile 5. Defending champ Jason Snow, who ran a personal best for the distance by nearly one minute, held on to second place throughout the race to finish there with a time of 43:59; Randall Nielsen in his longest race to date, finished third in 44:59; Steve Horness took fourth in 45:31 as he basically equaled his 2012 time; Ivan Espinosa was fifth in 48:26.
The race for the female title was a bit competitive as runner, cyclist, triathlete Theresa Harper, who has at some point won just about every road race on St. Croix, battled back and forth with Molly Nodler, a new-comer to St Croix road racing. Harper led early on in the race and later switched leads with Nodler, who held on to take first place by 30 seconds with a time of 45:45; Harper finished a close second in 46:15; Heidi Snow, V.I. Marathon Champion in 2009, finished third in 48:36 as she improved on her 2012 time; Camila Jensen was fourth in 48:52; Jenifer Stern was fifth in 56:09.
Below are the complete results with age-group breakdown of winners and minutes per mile pace.
The next event on the V.I. Pace Runners calendar is the 4-H/V.I. Pace Runners Cross-Country Series to be held at the University of the Virgin Islands St. Croix Campus on Oct. 2 followed by the annual Coast Weeks Beach Relay on Oct. 5.
