Body Found Aboard Boat at Christmas Cove

The body of a man who appeared to be about 50 was found Saturday aboard the 45-foot sailboat Dragon Lady. The boat had a St. Croix hailing port.

“It’s a medical death. There was no trauma to the body,” Police Department spokesman Melody Rames said. Police would not provide any other details, including the man’s name.

The boat was anchored off Christmas Cove on Great St. James island, located off the southeast end of St. Thomas.

Bob Malacarne, training officer at St. John Rescue, said when rescue got to the scene, the man was lying on his side on the transom with a scuba tank still on his back.

“His fins were off,” Malacarne said. He said the man was alone on the boat.

Malacarne said the U.S. Coast Guard called St. John Rescue after a couple passing by the boat in a dinghy around 5 p.m. saw the man lying on the boat. Malacarne said the woman took his pulse and called the Coast Guard.

St. John Rescue got the call around 5:45 p.m. and called police. According to Malacarne, the police responded in a boat commandeered from the nearby St. Thomas Yacht Club.
