Star Gives Results of 31st Annual Founders Day 5K

On Sunday, runners and walkers commemorated the 31st anniversary of the St. Thomas Association of Roadrunners (STAR) with the annual 5-kilometer race. This year’s race was unique in that no teen or sub-teen athletes participated. In the middle of their IAAF cross country season, many may have thought it wise to save their legs for next week’s competition (on Tuesday at UVI, starting at 3:30 p.m.). But even young adults in their 20s were in short supply. In fact, most of the best times were posted by runners in their 40s.
It’s not likely that any youth runners would have outrun them. Most outstanding of these was male overall winner Shane deGannes, whose 17:40 was the fastest time for this race since 2003 when the course record was set. In the women’s competition, Simone Francis, who had won this event in 2005, led the field in 26:46. Complete results are listed below.
Contact Roy Watlington (777-8183) for more information about this race. STAR’s next race is next week – the 15th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Two Miler. Both women and men will compete. The race starts at 4:30 p.m. at the WICO Dock at Havensight.
For additional information about the Breast Cancer Two Miler contact Therese Hodge at 775-6373.
