Soon Come, Smalls Says About Centerline Road Repair

The initial start date for much-needed repairs on St. John’s Centerline Road came and went with September. So did the next target date of the end of October. But Public Works Commissioner Darryl Smalls said this week the paperwork issues that held up the job are now resolved.

“I know I had promised…” he said.

He said he didn’t have a target start date, but he said Coral Bay residents wouldn’t have to wait too much longer for the repairs to start. Smalls said the paperwork is now wending its way through government channels, a necessity before the work can begin.

According to Smalls, the contractor for the $1 million plus job, Island Roads, has all the materials on hand.

“He’s ready and raring to go,” Smalls said.

Smalls said previously that work will begin on the worst spot. It is now marked with orange barriers and has an asphalt berm around it to deflect water. Only one lane is passable.

Two other spots also need repair, but aren’t as bad as the worst one.

Problems with the road began with Hurricane Otto in 2010 but May’s heavy rains caused the worst spot on the road to crumble more.
