V.I. Major Little League Team Clinches First Place in Pool A

The Virgin Islands Major Little League team finished pool play with a 15-12 victory over Bonaire on Wednesday in the 2014 Latin American Regional Major Little League tournament in Freeport, Bahamas.

The V.I. team started the game with four consecutive hits, and all four batters would score to give the team an early 4-0 lead. The V.I. added two more runs in the second inning, followed by single runs in the third and fourth innings to build an 8-0 lead.

Bonaire sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning. Seven runners scored in the inning off six walks, two errors and two hits, which cut the V.I. lead to one run, 8-7. The V.I. used four pitchers in that inning and a total of six in the game.

The V.I. rebounded with four more runs in the top of the fifth inning to expand its lead to 12-7.

Bonaire’s Banaigel Gentry hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning that brought his team to within four runs.

The first three batters for the V.I. reached base safely in the top of the sixth inning and all scored to pad the lead, 15-8. Bonaire scored four runs in the bottom of the inning and had the potential game-tying run at the plate, but he grounded into a fielder choice as the V.I. forced the runner out at second base to end the game.

The V.I. had 18 hits in the game and committed two errors, while Bonaire had 10 hits and committed one error. Najer Victor picked up the victory for the V.I. and Yannil Mieses suffered the lost.

Alexander McFarlane lead V.I. team with three hit in three at bats. Bryan Feliz and Jahsief Benjamin each had two hits in two at bats. Victor had three hits in four at bats. Mekoi Malone had two hits in four at bats. Karon Shelford had two hits in five at bats. And Janiya Victor and Triston Moore each had one hit in one at bat.

Bonaire was led offensively by Gentry, Braulio Martinez and Kelvin Marin, who each had two hits in three at bats.

The V.I. team is scheduled play Curacao at 1 p.m. Thursday in the first semifinal game. Puerto Rico will face the Bahamas team from Nassau. The winners advance to the championship game, which are scheduled for Friday.
