V.I. Police arrested Derick Greaves, a 23-year V.I. Police Department veteran assigned to the Executive Security Unit in the St. Thomas/St. John District, on domestic violence charges Mon., Oct. 13. He was one of two men arrested this week for domestic violence.
He is on leave without pay pending the outcome of the case, according to the VIPD.
Greaves was arrested around 10:30 a.m., Monday and charged with domestic violence simple assault and battery, and domestic violence disturbance of the peace after a woman filed a complaint for an assault earlier that day.
Police arrested Greaves. Superior Court Magistrate Judge Henry Carr set Bail at $500. Greaves posted bail and was released from custody pending his advice of rights hearing Wednesday.
“(T)he Police Department is once again stigmatized by yet another arrest of one their own,” Police Commissioner Rodney Querrard said in a statement. He said “any officer found to be in violation of any law will be held accountable like any other citizen in the community. Peace Officers, no matter the agency assigned, should, and must be held to a higher standard if probable cause for an arrest is found for any violation of the law. We cannot enforce the laws, and also break them. That is not being a part of the solution. That is being a part of the problem."
Querrard also said Greaves is innocent until proven guilty "just like every citizen arrested in the territory."
On St. Croix, Police arrested Enrique Schuster Oct. 14 charging him with domestic violence kidnapping. Police said Schuster held his ex-girlfriend against her will and she later escaped from his custody.
According to detectives, on June 10 the suspect saw his ex-girlfriend in the vicinity of Hope Depot on St. Croix. He asked her to get in his vehicle, which she did. When she asked to be let out, the suspect refused to release her and he drove out of the area. The victim managed to escape from the vehicle in the vicinity of the Sunny Isles stop light and seek help. Police said the suspect denied holding the victim against her will and police continued to investigate the incident.
Police said video surveillance and statements from several witnesses corroborated the victims’ version of the events.
Schuster was arrested at about 12:40 p.m. and placed on a $50,000 bail.
