Ferry and Sailboat Collide Near Red Hook

The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the cause of a collision between Varlack Venture’s ferry, Capitol Venture, and the 65-foot sailboat New Horizons, Coast Guard spokesman Ricardo Castrodad said Wednesday.

“What exactly happened to cause the collision will be looked into,” Castrodad said.

He said the collision happened around 6 p.m. Wednesday near Red Hook. According to Castrodad, the ferry continued on to Red Hook and the sailboat went to Sapphire Marina.

He said some passengers suffered minor injuries.

Castrodad said there didn’t appear to be any damage to the ferry boat, but the damage assessment on New Horizons isn’t complete.

He said there was no pollution from either of the boats.

No one returned a phone call at Varlack Ventures Wednesday. On Thursday, Kim Strausbaugh at New Horizons said the company’s phones are working but were experiencing a glitch when the Source tried to reach them Wednesday.
