Here are announced cancellations, postponements, early dismissals and other actions of community interest taken due to territorywide flooding. This posting is being updated continually as information becomes available.

Cyril King Airport Closed, Flights Canceled:
– The airport was closed around 6 p.m. Friday due to electrical problems on the runway that caused some airfield lights to short out. VIPA’s engineers believe that water from the heavy rains experienced Friday is the cause of the electrical problems.
– The runway will not reopen until 6 a.m. Saturday morning.
Airport Manager Jose Nazario said the following flights were affected due to the outage:
– American Airlines arrival from Miami (flight AA2355) which was scheduled to arrive in St. Thomas at 10:26 p.m. and depart at 9 a.m. Saturday was canceled.
– Seaborne Airlines canceled its evening flights.
– Air Sunshine canceled its evening flights.
– Cape Air canceled all flights prior to the outage due to the inclement weather.
Event’s Impacted:
– M2M Race was rescheduled for next Saturday, Nov. 15.
– The Division of Special Education’s Fall Parent Forum scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 8 at Marriott Frenchman’s Reef from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m has been postponed until further notice due to inclement weather.
– UVI’s home soccer match on Sat. Nov. 8, on the Sheen Campus, St. Croix has been postponed due to the weather. The match will be rescheduled.
– Due to inclement weather, the Jazz in the Park event, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 8, will be relocated from Roosevelt Park to Sugar Bay Resort and Spa. The event will take place indoors at the resort’s ballroom beginning at 6 p.m.
School Closures:
– All public schools were closed and students were dismissed at 1 p.m. Friday.
St. Thomas Roadways:
VITEMA has received several reports of flash flooding along St. Thomas roadways, including:
– Altona vicinity Addelita Cancryn Jr. High School
– Contant
– Brookman Road
– Harwood Highway
Motorists are advised to use extreme caution while traversing roadways in these areas. Do not drive into pooled water. It may be deeper than it appears.
– VITRAN bus services on St. Thomas and St. John are currently operating.
St. Croix Roadways:
VITRAN buses on St. Croix stopped running at 11:30 a.m. Friday due to deteriorating road conditions. Torrential downpours have caused flash floods and rock slides along roadways.
VITEMA has received several reports of flash flooding along St. Croix roadways, including:
– Morning Star vicinity entrance to Salt River
– Estate Glynn, vicinity Glynn Gas Station
– Entire roadway to Ricardo Richards Elementary School
– Areas of Mon Bijou
– Estate Humbug
– Peter’s Rest vicinity of Junie’s Bar
Motorists are advised to use extreme caution while traversing roadways in these areas. Do not drive into pooled water. It may be deeper than it appears.
Business Closures:
– Innovative closed its business office and retail store at Estate Diamond on St. Croix Friday at 11 a.m. because of flooding on the main level of the building.
Solid Waste:
– The Waste Management Authority advises residents of the following operational updates due to recent heavy rainfall that has been impacting the territory.
– St. Thomas: The Bovoni Landfill and the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center are currently closed as the road conditions within the facility have deteriorated and are currently deemed unsafe.
– St. John: The Susannaberg Transfer Station will be closed at 3 p.m. Friday.
– St. Croix: The Anguilla Landfill, the St. Croix Transfer Station and the Peter’s Rest Convenience Center closed at 2 p.m. Friday.
– The territory’s landfills and transfer stations will remain closed until the individual situations can be evaluated once the rainfall has subsided. Updates will be provided. Please call the landfills and transfer stations to confirm their status: St. Thomas 774-3665; St. John 774-2141; St. Croix 778-1231.
– Residents are asked to refrain from disposing of household waste at the bin sites until after the passage of the inclement weather to decrease any overflow that may occur.
– All persons with house-to-house collection are asked to secure their waste receptacles until after the passage of the weather. Collection schedules will resume as soon as possible after the weather has passed.
-Businesses are reminded that their waste is to be taken directly to the landfill or transfer station by a licensed and permitted waste hauler. Any business found utilizing a public bin site for disposal of commercial waste will be cited.
Wastewater:
-The territory’s wastewater collection system continues to operate normally, but the influx of large quantities of stormwater runoff has increased the level of the flow in the system. Manhole covers are dislodged in certain areas and the WMA’s Wastewater Division’s staff continues to secure them as they are reported.
-The current condition of the sewer lines allows for the inflow and infiltration of storm water into the sewer system and may exceed the pumping capacity at various pump stations that carry the flow from residential areas to the wastewater treatment plants. Until the rains and the run-off subside, the sewer collection system will be impacted.
-Motorists are asked to take extreme caution when traversing through flooded roadways, especially in areas known for popped manholes, such as adjacent to the Best Western Hotel in Christiansted and in areas of Gallows Bay.
-Residents are asked to report any overflows to the WMA at (340) 715-9100 on St. Thomas; (340) 712-4962 on St. Croix and (340) 774-2141 on St. John.
