The Forum Releases Schedule of Events for January – April, 2015

The Forum will be celebrating the New Year on Saturday, Jan. 17 with the Intersection Trio. The concert will take place at 8 p.m. at Prior-Jollek Hall. Food and beverages will be provided by Amalia Cafe and will be served one hour prior to the event and during intermission.
Tickets are $35 ($10 for teachers, $5 for students); ticket outlets are Frenchtown Deli, Chelsea Drug Store, Interiors, Medicine Shoppe and Instantseats.com.
Information on the Forum’s 2015 season follows. (Please note, the Christopher O’Reilly concert date has been changed to Friday, Feb. 27.)

“Die Meistersinger” (Wagner) will perform at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29, at Prior-Jollek Hall.
James Levine returns to one of his signature Wagner works, conducting this epic comedy—back at the Met for the first time in eight years—about a group of Renaissance “master singers” whose song contest unites a city. Johan Reuter, Johan Botha and Annette Dasch lead a superb international cast in this charming and magisterial celebration of the power of music and art.
Asi Wind will perform at 8 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 7, at Prior-Jollek Hall.
Asi Wind, magician and mind reader, is spontaneous and unpredictable. His performances are a rollercoaster for the mind. He combines a free-spirited playfulness with superb skill and a uniquely creative mind. Wind is one of the world’s most innovative magicians, who not only performs his own material on stage but develops material for other magicians as well. He is currently working on David Blaine’s new top-secret show. His peers have presented him with the International Merlin Award for “Most Innovative Show” – an award previously given to David Copperfield, Criss Angel, and Penn and Teller.www.asiwind.com
Renee Fleming will star in “The Merry Widow” (Lehar) at 7 p.m., on Thursday, Feb. 12, at Prior-Jollek Hall.
The great Renée Fleming stars as the beguiling femme fatale, who captivates all Paris in Lehár’s enchanting operetta, seen in a new staging by Broadway virtuoso director and choreographer Susan Stroman (“The Producers,”O”klahoma!,” “Contact”). Stroman and her design team of Julian Crouch (“Satyagraha,” “The Enchanted Island”) and costume designer William Ivey Long (“Cinderella,” “Grey Gardens,’ “Hairspray”) have created an art-nouveau setting for an opera that climaxes with singing and dancing grisettes at the legendary Maxim’s. Nathan Gunn co-stars as Danilo and Kelli O’Hara is Valencienne. Andrew Davis conducts.

Christopher O’Riley is a pianist and National Public Radio (NPR) host of “From the Top.” As an arranger, he infuses works that include Bach organ works to opera scenes, Piazzolla tangoes to songs from the jazz and rock repertoires. He has an enormous list of his favorites from decades past and present: Radiohead, Stephen Sondheim, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, The Bad Plus, The Velvet Underground, The Cure, Joni Mitchell, John McLaughlin, Raymond Scott, Tori Amos, Guided by Voices, Tears for Fears and Billy Joel. www.christopheroriley.com
“Les Contes d’Hoffman” (Offenbach) will be presented at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, at Prior-Jollek Hall.
The magnetic tenor Vittorio Grigolo takes on the tortured poet and unwitting adventurer of the title of Offenbach’s operatic masterpiece in the Met’s wild, kaleidoscopic production. Hibla Gerzmava, Erin Morley and Christine Rice sing the three heroines—each an idealized embodiment of some aspect of Hoffmann’s desire. Thomas Hampson portrays the shadowy four villains, and Yves Abel conducts the sparkling score.
Brother Guy Consolmagno performs at 7 p.m., on Thursday, March 19, at Prior-Jollek Hall.
Jesuit Astronomer Guy Consolmagno from the Vatican Observatory Foundation will give a speech titled: "Are Asteroids Fluffy?" The Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society has awarded the Carl Sagan Medal to him for "outstanding communication by an active planetary scientist to the general public."
“Treasure Island” (Theater) will be performed at 6:30 p.m., on Saturday, March 28, (family event – note early start time) at Prior-Jollek Hall.
This play is based on the classic Robert Louis Stevenson’s story of murder, money and mutiny, brought to life in a thrilling new stage adaptation by Bryony Lavery and broadcast live from the National Theatre. This is a special family event – with gifts, people in costume and specials on student tickets.
Gabriel Lefkowitz will perform at 8 p.m., on Saturday, April 4.
Gabriel Lefkowitz is a violinist, composer and conductor living in Knoxville, Tenn., where he is the concertmaster of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, as well as in New York City, where he is principal conductor/artistic director of the Eon Contemporary Orchestra. Working from his home studio, he is active as a composer/orchestrator for films, television and games. Lefkowitz will perform a classical violin repertoire. www.gabriellefkowitz.com
“Iolanta” and “Bluebeard’s Castle” (Tchaikovsky and Bartok) will be performed at 7 p.m., on Thursday, April 16, at Prior-Jollek Hall.
On the heels of her triumphant Met performances in “Eugene Onegin,” soprano Anna Netrebko takes on another Tchaikovsky heroine in the first opera of this intriguing double bill, consisting of an enchanting fairy tale (Iolanta) followed by an erotic psychological thriller (Duke Bluebeard’s Castle). Netrebko stars as the beautiful blind girl, who experiences love for the first time in “Iolanta,” while Nadja Michael is the unwitting victim of the diabolical Bluebeard, played by Mikhail Petrenko. Both operas are directed by Mariusz Trelinski, who was inspired by classic noir films of the 1940s. “Iolanta” also stars Piotr Beczala. Valery Gergiev will conduct both operas.
Note: Forum Film Festival will be held at 7 p.m., on three Wednesdays, May 20, 27 and June 3 (sponsored by First Bank) at Market Square East Cinema.
