Tourism Seeks Applicants for N.Y. Internship

The Tourism Department in conjunction with its public relations agency, Development Counsellors International, is seeking applicants for a summer 2015 internship in New York City, Tourism said Wednesday in a news release.

The program provides a Virgin Islander with the opportunity to develop skills and obtain experience toward a career in tourism marketing. The chosen intern will play a role in promoting the territory to a national audience, helping to increase visitor arrivals and tourism spending in the territory, the news release said.

“Since the summer of 2013, our New York City internship has provided six young professionals from the Virgin Islands the invaluable experience necessary to pursue a career in tourism marketing and public relations,” Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty said. “We are eager to identify another talented candidate to join the program this summer and ask everyone to spread the word to encourage enthusiastic, qualified Virgin Islanders to apply.”

According to the Tourism announcement, these are the qualifications:

– Candidates must be from the Virgin Islands and a recent graduate or in their final year of study at an accredited undergraduate or graduate university program with a major in marketing, mass communications, public relations and/or tourism studies.

– Qualified applicants must possess sound writing and verbal communication abilities, exceptional organization skills and have an eye for detail. A proven ability to adapt to new, fast-paced conditions, adhere to deadlines for assigned tasks and exude a positive, “go-getter” attitude will also ensure success in this role.

– It is recommended that applicants also be able to illustrate their deep knowledge of the Virgin Islands and its unique offerings.

The chosen candidate will receive round-trip airfare to New York City and a monthly stipend to cover housing, transportation and other living expenses.

The summer intern will support the territory’s account team at Development Counsellors International’s New York office from June through August on a fulltime basis.

Daily tasks will include, but will not be limited to, press release and pitch writing, media outreach, assisting with event planning and trade show logistics, drafting and editing client documents and assisting with media coverage reporting.

Interested candidates can send their resume and cover letter by email to Development Counsellors International’s Maureen Haley at maureen.haley@aboutdci.com. The application deadline is April 30.
