The Democratic Party of the Virgin Islands announces the upcoming activities in preparation for its participation in the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on July 25-28. On June 4, local democrats will caucus to vote for either Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders to be the party’s nominee as the next president of the United States. Democrats will also vote for candidates vying for at-large delegates seats throughout the territory.
Interested individuals who want to run as a delegate must file a “Statement of Candidacy” with Carol M. Burke, national committeewoman and coordinator of party affairs, by May 3. Eligibility requirements are that individuals must be registered democrats and in good standing with the Democratic Party of the Virgin Islands.
All candidates must also be registered with the Board of Elections by May 3. Applications for “Statement of Candidacy” will be available on April 15 from party officers and the district offices on St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John. Candidates for at-large delegate will pledge support for Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders or remain uncommitted.
The seven at-large delegates in addition to an alternate and a page will join the current super delgates to finalize the composition of the V.I. delegation. The super delegates are Delegate to Congress Stacey Plaskett; Cecil Benjamin, state chair; Riise Richards, vice chair; Carol M. Burke, national committeewoman; and Emmett Hansen, national committeeman.
“We have been working feverishly to ensure that Democrats come together and participate in such an important process. Our party continues to push for voting rights of Virgin Islanders until that day when we vote for the president.” Burke said.
