DOH to Unveil New Technology Kiosks for Healthier Mothers and Children

Michelle S. Davis, health commissioner nominee, the USVI Maternal Child Health (MCH) and Children with Special Care Needs Program, and St. Andrew Development will unveil a new interactive wellness kiosk and tablet program that provides important health information, especially for mothers. The unveiling will take place at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 10, at the MCH in Charles Harwood Medical Complex on St. Croix, and 11:30 a.m., Thursday, May 12, at the MCH in Nisky on St. Thomas.
The touch-screen kiosk and tablets provide a wide range of information on healthy eating as well as Cribs for Kids—an application that helps every baby sleep safer.
Topics under the Healthy Nutrition application include infant formula and baby foods, dairy and dairy substitutes, whole grains, beans and peanut butter as well as fruits, vegetables and juice. The information is designed specifically for women, infants and children. Cribs for Kids is an interactive program that can teach new and seasoned parents and caregivers how to put their infants to sleep safely. The kiosks and tablets also include a telephone number to connect the user with the Maternal Child Health Program and all of the services this department provides.
“Women are busy, and these kiosks and tablets will provide a quick and interesting way to learn about infant and children healthy eating as well as sleep safety,” said Dr. Davis, a former maternal and child health director in both Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia. “The first step toward wellness is education, and these kiosks and tablets will provide our easy access to important health information.”
The kiosk design is similar to that of an automated teller machine. Health information is provided in a manner that serves multiple reading abilities for easy comprehension and recollection. The touch-screen technology attracts visitors and allows for the information to be provided in both audio and visual formats to appeal to the broader audience.
“The US Virgin Islands Department of Health is proud to be offering this service on St. Thomas and St. Croix," said Commissioner Nominee Davis.
