BIR Launches Online Pay for Excise Taxes Beginning May 20

The Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) informs the taxpaying public that the Excise Tax Office now offers online payment options. Excise taxpayers can now enter their excise tax returns online and immediately pay the taxes through MasterCard or VISA. Taxpayers clearing personal items, which are exempt from excise tax, can also clear those shipments from their offices or their homes. The public is reminded that all shipments, including those through the U.S. Postal Service and other commercial delivery services, are subject to clearance through the Excise Tax Office.
“This is an exciting time for the Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue. We are embracing the benefits of technology to ensure that our taxpayers can obtain their imported goods timely and efficiently,” said Marvin L. Pickering, BIR director.
Excise taxpayers were invited to training sessions, which were held on all three islands, from Tuesday through Thursday of this week. The taxpayers received a step-by-step tutorial of the online payment process. The excise tax online system went live on Friday, May 20.
Pickering thanks the BIR employees who contributed to the success of this endeavor, especially the excise staff and the computer operations staff. In addition, the BIR received support from corporate partners, namely Raw Data, FirstBankVI and Evertec.
Taxpayers are asked to utilize the excise tax online program through the BIR’s Web site: www.vibir.gov and clicking on “Excise Tax Data Program.” Taxpayers with questions concerning the online payment process should contact Glenford Hodge, supervisor of the Excise Tax Division, at 715-1050, ext. 3201.
