DOH Has Money to Distribute for Substance Abuse Programs

The Department of Health (DOH) has money to distribute to various organizations in order to create substance abuse relief and awareness/prevention programs, in the areas of underage drinking, prescription drug use, and suicide among veterans and their family members. This is an opportunity for organizations to receive more money and funding. DOH will hold a second round of interest meetings to explain the eligibility and application process, according to a press release issued Monday by the V.I. Department of Health.
“We invite and want the local community organizations and private business sector to take advantage of the money we are federally mandated to distribute,” said DOH Commissioner Michelle S. Davis, Ph.D. “Community and faith-based organizations in addition to schools/students, the university, and the private sector and business community are invited to find out how they can receive the monies that the Department of Health has been awarded.”
The Application Informational Meeting will be held:
St. Croix: Tuesday, July 26, from 9 a.m. to noon
Department of Health, Charles Harwood Complex — 1st floor, Room No. 1016
St. Thomas: Thursday, July 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Roy L. Schneider Hospital — 2nd floor Conference Room
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) has awarded the Virgin Islands Department of Health — Division of Mental Health, Alcoholism and Drug Dependency Services (DMHADDS), a five-year (2015 – 2020) Strategic Prevention Framework Partnership for Success (SPF PFS) cooperative agreement.
The purpose of the grant is to assess, identify, implement and strengthen best-fit (evidence-based) prevention interventions that will improve substance use outcomes and achieve targeted community change. This program joins and builds on other territorial initiatives and prevention-focused community efforts pursuing health, safety and success for all of the community’s children and adults.
The purpose of this conference is to provide interested parties with information to enable them to prepare and submit an application for a community SPF PFS sub-grant. There are four key principles of the SPF PFS:
1) states and communities follow the Public Health Approach
2) focus on outcome-based prevention
3) follow a strategic planning process (SPF)
4) use data throughout the process to inform decisions
