CFVI’s Anderson Family Fund Announces Availability of Teacher Grants

The Anderson Family Fund at the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands (CFVI) is once again offering teacher grants for the 2016-2017 school year. This will be the 15th consecutive year that the Anderson family is offering funding to educators in the territory.
Anderson Teacher Grants are open to professionals in the elementary, middle and high schools. Grants of $5,000 are available for collaborative school-based proposals that are inclusive and creative. Librarians, assistant teachers and guidance counselors in the public school system of the U.S. Virgin Islands are also eligible to apply for traditional Anderson grants that range from $250 to $1,000, to implement an innovative project in their classrooms and/or schools.
Funding for these grants will be awarded on a competitive basis for projects that seek to improve student achievement. Priority will be given to proposals from teachers in the public school system. The project should directly involve students and incorporate creative strategies. Project descriptions should be clear and well organized, and a realistic budget must be provided. Activities should improve student learning, and outcomes should be measurable and substantive.
Applications for the 2016 Teacher Grants are available now and must be submitted to CFVI no later than midnight, Friday, Sept. 30. Applications can be submitted through an online portal located at cfvi.fluidreview.com. Successful applicants must agree to submit a brief written report, receipts for expenditures and, if possible, visual documentation on the use of the grant at the end of the funding period. Any applicant who was a recipient of a 2015 Anderson Teachers Grant must have submitted a written final report on the use of the 2015 grant in order to be eligible for a grant in 2016.
Last year, CFVI awarded grants to 18 teachers and professionals who were working in 15 schools throughout the territory. Some of the programs that were implemented included: book and gardening clubs, teen dating violence awareness training, STEM research and alternative energy projects. Several of our recipients received national awards for their programs and can attest to the positive outcomes of their projects.
The Anderson Family Fund for Education was established at CFVI in 2002 to help improve public education for children in the U.S.V.I. The programs are funded by the family of the late John E. Anderson Sr. in Los Angeles, Calif., and Topa Properties Ltd. To date, the fund has distributed close to $300,000 to public school teachers throughout the territory.
