USDA to Distribute Emergency Food Assistance to Eligible Families

The V.I. Department of Education’s Division of Special Nutrition Programs is scheduled to distribute USDA food commodities for St. Thomas and St. John families under the Emergency Food Assistance Program. Commodities are limited to one package per eligible household. The distribution sites and times are as follows:
St. John: 7 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 17, in cafeteria at Julius E. Sprauve School until supplies are depleted; St. Thomas: 7 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 24, in cafeteria at Lockhart Elementary School until supplies are depleted.
The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) uses income and not age to determine program eligibility. This distribution is for all persons meeting the eligibility guidelines.
Individuals or heads of households eligible to receive these commodities must meet one of the following criteria:
1. A person or head of household whose gross family income does not exceed the 185 percent of the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines for July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017. (get the income eligibility guideline table by calling Federal Commodities Officer Correy Lettsome at 774-0100 ext. 2818)
2. A person or head of household who is a client of any of the following income certified assistance programs:
a. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
b. Medical Assistance Program
c. Be a tenant of a Subsidized Public Housing program.
3. To obtain commodities, proper identification must be presented. Persons completing the self-certification form should be prepared to provide information relative to gross income. Any one unable to provide satisfactory information to the distribution site staff will not receive a commodity package. It is suggested that potential recipients bring along sturdy boxes or bags to assist with the transport of the food packages.
4. For further information, call Federal Commodities Officer Correy Lettsome at 774-0100 ext. 2818.
