Five members of the V.I. National Guard will be honored for bravery at a Tuesday afternoon ceremony marking the 380th anniversary of the founding of what became the National Guard.
The ceremony and celebration are scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Joint Force Headquarters in Estate Bethlehem on St. Croix.
The Adjutant General of the Virgin Islands, Brig. Gen. Deborah Y. Howell, will award five soldiers for their act of bravery after they assisted residents involved in a vehicle accident on St. Croix Dec. 3.
The VING listed the names of the five soldiers to be honored as Cdt. Rasheed Escobar, Sgt. Cornelius JnBaptiste, Sgt. Titus Dubois, Pfc. Deron Vanlange and Pfc. Brandon Titre. All are members of the 662 Engineering Company.
What is now the U.S. National Guard came into being Dec. 13, 1636, when the colonial Massachusetts General Court in Salem established that all able-bodied men between the ages of 16 and 60 were required to join the militia.
