V.I. Certified Public Manager Program Accepting Applications for 2017-2018

The Virgin Islands Certified Public Manager® (CPM) Program is now accepting applications for its 2017-2018 Colleague Group. The program is a nationally accredited, comprehensive management development program open to managers in federal, state and local government agencies. The VI CPM is also open to managers in non-profit and private sector organizations. Its primary goal is to improve the performance of public sector managers and the organizational performance of state, local and federal governments.

The VI CPM program is sponsored by the Division of Personnel (DOP) and the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) sponsors the VI CPM program, which is delivered by UVI’s Institute for Leadership and Organizational Effectiveness (ILOE).

The program is designed around seven core competency areas that are set by the National Certified Public Manager® Consortium, the accrediting body of all CPM programs. Training in these competencies is included in the CPM classes: Personal and Organizational Integrity; Managing Work; Leading People; Developing Self; Systemic Integration; Public Service Focus; and Change Leadership.

VI CPM participants also complete an applied project (capstone project). The project is typically a real-world problem faced in the CPM participant’s agency that would benefit from a systematic application of the principles taught in the classroom.

Managers and supervisors can complete the VI CPM® Program in 14 months as part of a cohort or “colleague group.” This group attends classes collectively, three days per month, becoming certified public managers together. The classes are held on St. Thomas and St. Croix at UVI. The 2017-2018 Colleague Group of the CPM Program will begin in February 2017.

To be considered for participation in the VI CPM program, an applicant must currently be a manager or supervisor within a local or federal government agency, non-profit organization or private sector business in the U.S.V.I. and have a minimum of four years of management/supervisory experience. The application process closes at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017. The application, as well as additional program information, can be accessed on the Division of Personnel’s Web site at www.dopusvi.org/employee-development.

For more information, contact the Division of Personnel’s Employee Training and Development Unit at 774-8588 or by e-mail: CPM@dop.vi.gov; or contact Dr. Haldane Davies, VI CPM Program director, at 693-1004 or by e-mail: hdavies@live.uvi.edu.
