UVI Little Theater to Present ‘Strong Currents” – A Tribute to Austin Clarke

UVI Little Theatre will present “Strong Currents” – a tribute to Austin “Tom” Clarke on whose novels the play is based. It is written and directed by David Edgecombe.

UVI Little Theatre performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. on March 16, 17, 18, 24 and 25; and for 7 p.m. March 19.

Tickets for Strong Currents are now on sale on St. Thomas at UVI Bookstore, UVI Human Relations (ACC Building 1st floor); Reichhold Box Office and on line at www.reichholdcenter.org. Student tickets cost $5; general admission costs $15.

“Strong Currents” chronicles the experiences of five friends who all moved from the Caribbean to Toronto in search of a better life. Together they weather the storms of fortune, but when one of them aspires to be a poet, it causes his friends to ridicule him. Yet, it is the strength of their friendships that will determine who swims and who sinks in strong currents.

The University of the Virgins is producing the play as a tribute to Austin Clarke, who is originally from Barbados but moved to Canada in 1955 to became one of Canada’s foremost authors, known especially for his novels. Clarke died last June in Toronto. The play, written and directed by David Edgecombe, is based on two of Clarke’s novels: “The Meeting Point” and “Storm of Fortune.”
