There are no fireflies here in the Virgin Islands, but there is the incredible Salt River Bioluminescent Bay on St. Croix. Like fireflies, organisms in the bay luminesce (glow) on certain nights. There are very few places in the world that have “biobays,” like St. Croix.
Learn all about the phenomenon of bioluminescence at VI-EPSCoR’s Science Café on Tuesday, April 25. Marsha Taylor, from UVI’s Center for Marine & Environmental Studies, will talk about bioluminescence and the program she hosts to take high school students kayaking on the biobay at night.
Participants can enter for a chance to win a trip to participate in a night kayak tour. For more information, contact Migdalia Roach at migdalia.roach@uvi.edu or call 692-1620, ext. 4500.
VI-EPSCoR, (Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) hosts regular Science Café events on all three islands to engage the community in the world-class marine research taking place at UVI. Topics vary greatly but are always fascinating and relevant to life in the U.S.V.I. Visit the Web site at www.viepscor.org.
