Emergency Room Is and Will Stay Open At Schneider

The emergency room at Schneider Regional Medical Center is open and will remain that way through the coming storm.

Many people have noticed the military is taking down the tents housing their mobile emergency room adjacent to Schneider and are concerned about the potential lack of emergency medical care.

“They are just taking down the tents temporarily for the storm,” Schneider representative Edwina Stephens said Sunday. While the hospital itself has been evacuated, the emergency room is up and functioning. The military set up the tents and secondary emergency room as a backup because the one in the hospital was getting full, she said. Military medical personnel will still be there as well as Schneider’s own medical personnel, Stephens said.

Meanwhile, the storm is worrisome for St. Thomas and St. John. There is a chance of it hitting St. Thomas with hurricane force winds Wednesday and Thursday. Post-hurricane Irma, many roofs are gone, there is a shortage of tarps, a lack of power in most places and St. Thomas and St. John have barely finished clearing debris blocking major roads. The timing is not ideal.
