Students were sent home early Monday at St. Croix Educational Complex due to low-water pressure at the school campus. Education Department officials say a partial power outage caused the water pump to fail, resulting in a water service interruption campus-wide. Schools affected by the dismissal are the St. Croix Educational Complex, Career and Technical Education Center and three schools that have been holding classes their since the hurricanes: the Eulalie Rivera Elementary School, the Arthur A. Richards Junior High School and the Alfredo Andrews Elementary School. Buses have been dispatched to take students to their drop-off points. facilities personnel, along with Water and Power Authority are working to restore water to the campus. School is scheduled to resume as normal on Tuesday, Feb. 13.
The school has been using cistern water and the pump and officials are in the process of trying to switch over to WAPA’s potable water system.
This is the second time in two weeks that multiple St. Croix schools have been closed due to water issues. On Feb. 2, a WAPA water pump failure led to the draining of the Kingshill water storage facility and loss of water pressure in the surrounding area. St. Croix Central High School,which is currently also housing several St.Croix schools, was dismissed due to lack of water. In that case, Central was on WAPA water, while Complex was on cistern water. The two outages are unrelated.
