Three to Vie for 2018-19 Miss UVI Ambassadorial Title on April 14

Three will compete for the title Miss University of the Virgin Islands Ambassadorial.

The University of the Virgin Islands Student Government Association’s (SGA) Queens Committee invites the public to its annual Miss University of the Virgin Islands Ambassadorial Competition that will take place at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 14, in the St. Croix Educational Complex Gymnasium.

“We are glad to continue the tradition of hosting the Miss University of the Virgin Islands Ambassadorial Competition,” said Kevin Dixon, coordinator of student activities on St. Croix. “We are always ecstatic about providing opportunities for our students to showcase their talents and intellect, as they all vie to serve as an ambassador for our institution.”

The competition alternates between, the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses. Though the competition was slated to be held on St. Thomas this year, due to the damage on St. Thomas from Hurricane Irma, specifically to the Reichhold Center, SGA–St. Thomas was unable to host the event.

The Ambassadorial Competition, seeks to find a young, vibrant goodwill ambassador for the university.

This year’s competition will showcase three UVI students, who will compete for a chance to succeed Angelique Flemming, reigning Miss University of the Virgin Islands.

Contestant No. 1 is Ashley Simpson, a 24-year-old sophomore nursing student at UVI- Albert A. Sheen Campus. Her platform is centered around health awareness, especially among her peers and is entitled: “On Your Way to A Better You.”

Contestant No. 2 is Kendra Kent, a 21-year-old junior studying criminal justice at UVI-St. Thomas Campus. Her platform is centered around mental health and wellness awareness, especially among her peers and is entitled: “The Wounds Unseen.”

Contestant No. 3 is Ki-Ana Tonge, a 21-year-old sophomore majoring in early childhood education at UVI- Albert A. Sheen Campus. Her platform, “Education is Paramount/Key,” emphasizes the pivotal role seeking higher education plays in ensuring a bright and successful future.

The contestants will participate in a closed pre-pageant interview on Saturday, April 7, in UVI’s Great Hall on the Sheen Campus. Points accumulated from this segment will go toward the overall competition scores.

The Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition has six other segments: business wear, introduction, ambassadorial presentation, talent, evening wear, and question and answer.

Miss UVI 2018-2019 will receive a one-year tuition, room and board scholarship valued at approximately $13,000, among other prizes. The contestant crowned Miss UVI is expected to participate in UVI’s recruitment efforts, represent the university locally and abroad, and maintain a highly visible role on UVI’s campuses on St. Croix and St. Thomas.

Tickets are available in the UVI Bookstore on both campuses. They are $15 for UVI students with valid student ID cards, $20 for the general public, $25 for VIP (includes reserved seating only), $10 for children six-12 years, and free for children five and under (children can be paid for at the door.)
