St. John Recovery Choir Will Sing the Music of Motown

The St. John Recovery Choir will be performing concerts of Motown music on Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22 at 7 p.m. at the St. John School of the Arts in Cruz Bay.  Admission is by donation.

The Recovery Choir was launched by director Kristen Carmichael-Bowers who invited the community to come together to sing on a Sunday afternoon in the Frank Powell Park shortly after hurricanes Irma and Maria devastated the island.

“I saw that members of St. John Singers and St. John Women’s Ensemble had been missing their community singing,” said Carmichael-Bowers.  “The St. John Recovery Choir provides an opportunity for men and women of St. John to come together to sing uplifting Motown music.”

Everyone was welcome to join the choir regardless of singing experience, provided they were willing to attend rehearsals and to practice regularly.

“Having a functioning community choir on St. John has felt like reclaiming an aspect of our identity temporarily pushed aside in the urgency of the initial recovery process,” said Carmichael-Bowers.

It has also given talented singers in the community the opportunity to show just how soulful they can be.

The St. John Recovery Choir is fully funded by the St. John Community Foundation. The St. John School of the Arts has donated the space for weekly rehearsals for the two concerts.
