The Sharks defeated the Archers, 24-16, in a battle of undefeated teams in Summer Flag Football League action Saturday night at Lionel Roberts Stadium.

The Sharks first score of the game came after Lou Garfield connected with Julio Hodge on a long fourth down to get the Sharks in good scoring position. Garfield finished off the drive with a touchdown on a quarterback sneak.

On the next possession the Shark’s Corey Hodge came up with an interception, giving the Sharks great field position. Garfield then found Corey Hodge with a touchdown pass to increase the lead. The two-point conversion made the score 14-0.

The Archers responded right before the two minute mark of the first half when quarterback Kyle LaMotta found wide receiver Kyron Correa on a long pass in the corner of the end-zone. The two-point conversion was completed to bring the score to 14-8.

The Archers got some point for their defense on the ensuing possession as they were able to sack Garfield in the end zone for a safety which made the score 14-10 at halftime.

The second half started with a miscue from the Archers, as a low snap caused LaMotta to fumble the ball in the end zone resulting in two more points for the Sharks.

Later in the quarter the Sharks were able to find success in the short passing game as Garfield found Kursin Hansen on a bubble screen. Hansen caught the ball and made a few defenders as he switched sidelines to gain 40 yards. Later in the drive, Garfield converted on third and goal as he kept a read-option that resulted in a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, and the score stood at 22-10.

The Archers came back with a two-play drive, with Correa scoring his second touchdown of the game by taking a screen pass 60 yards to bring the Archers within in six points.

But the Sharks finished off the scoring, as their defense recorded a late safety to bring the game to its final score of 24-16.

Sharks coach Ray Husband said after the game, “Hard work pays off, these dudes working every day.”

He also mentioned the trust in his team after needing a late quarterback change due to injury, saying, “Hansen could start for any team at quarterback, it just that he is a better receiver than he is a quarterback He’s been one of my players since I was coaching High school.”

In the night’s other game, the Canes squeaked by Dynasty 8-6 to gain their first win of the season while dropping the Dynasty to 0-3.

The Dynasty recorded the game’s first score late in the first half when an interception put them in good field position. They scored a touchdown with 22 seconds remaining in the half.

With that little time on the clock, the Canes drove the field in just three plays. Sebastian Silva found Yohance Henely on the last play of the half to tie the game at six a piece.

Neither team were able to get much going in the second half. A fourth quarter Canes sack in the end zone that out the final points on the board and gave the Canes the win.
League action resumes Saturday with the 1-2 Canes facing off against the 3-0 Sharks at seven, while the Dynasty (1-2) take on the Archers (2-1).
