The Virgin Islands Law Enforcement Planning Commission (LEPC) with funding through the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant/Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) is now accepting proposals from private non-profit organizations, religious organizations and government agencies to assist in implementing effective crime prevention and criminal justice improvement projects.
The United States Congress identified 28 authorized purpose areas for the Edward Byrne Memorial funds. The four listed priorities will be to address drug-related and juvenile delinquency issues, law enforcement, drug treatment programs, crime prevention and educational programs. Funds requested cannot exceed $40,000 for year-round funding and $30,000 for summer funding. The applications will be reviewed by LEPC staff and the JAG board. Government agency awards will be based on the governor’s priorities.
When applying, applications must include one or several of the following components:
1) crime prevention and intervention,
2) drug prevention and awareness,
3) gang intervention,
4) conflict resolution and anger management or other components that focus on youth and adults at risk.
Non-profit organizations applying must include in their application package a valid DUNS number, proof of SAMs registration, Certificate of Incorporation, IRS Determination Letter regarding 501©3 status, Articles of Incorporation and a current Certificate of Good Standing from the Office of the Lieutenant Governor. Failure to submit all documents at the scheduled deadline will result in the application’s disqualification for funding.
Projects will be awarded based upon the proposed services, organization’s history and standing with LEPC and within the community (former sub-grantees), delivery of service, specified target population, statistical data, coordination with other non-profit organizations, local government agencies, federal agencies as well as community support and cost per participant.
