Jakwan Sweeney, a 21-year-old from St. Croix, was arrested March 26 on St. Thomas on an indictment charging him with conspiracy and possession with the intent to distribute cocaine, U.S. Attorney Gretchen C.F. Shappert, announced.
Sweeney made his initial appearance before Magistrate Judge Ruth Miller and was detained pending further proceedings.
According to the indictment, between Aug. 1 and Sept. 24, 2018, Sweeney conspired to possess with the intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine.
If convicted of conspiracy or possession with the intent to distribute cocaine, Sweeney faces a term of imprisonment of not less than 10 years and not more than life and a fine of $10 million.
Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration investigated this matter and the case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sigrid M. Tejo-Sprotte.
