A fire was reported at the site at 7:40 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 13. Virgin Islands Fire Services and VIWMA contractors worked expeditiously to suppress the fire; however, some hot spots remain active, and efforts are ongoing to finalize suppression activities. This is at least the ninth fire since the beginning of the year and at least the 14th since January of 2019.
VIWMA advises the public and all haulers that landfill operations have been suspended. Haulers are asked to hold municipal solid waste (MSW) until normal operating hours resume. Green waste only will be accepted at the front section of the landfill. No other disposals will be allowed at this time.
The Authority will continue to provide updates regarding changes that may affect public health, the environment and haulers utilizing the landfill.
