Territory’s COVID-19 Toll Hits 126 With Death of St. Croix Man, 93

The territory has recorded its 126th death from COVID-19 — a 93-year-old man on St. Croix — the Health Department reported Wednesday afternoon while extending its condolences to his family and friends.

As of Tuesday, the latest figures available, the department reported 17 new cases, bringing the territory’s total to 87, with 55 of those on St. Croix, 32 on St. Thomas, and none on St. John. The median age among cases is 36 years, it said.

While the safety protocols introduced at the start of the pandemic are no longer mandatory, the Health Department has urged residents to continue to follow precautionary measures such as practicing social distancing around those outside of your household, wearing a mask in crowded public areas, washing your hands often with soap and warm water, and cleaning frequently used areas thoroughly.

Such measures have worked to slow the spread of the disease, as well as getting vaccinated and boosted, the department noted.

Vaccines and boosters are free and readily available to anyone age five years and older. To make an appointment, call the Health Department at 340-244-0016 on St. Croix, 340-777-8803, ext. 2600, on St. Thomas, and 340-776-6400 on St. John.

To report a suspected case of COVID-19, call 340-712-6299 or 340-776-1519. For general information on the virus, visit covid19usvi.com or text COVID19USVI to 888777.
