Two Men Face Assault, Weapons Charges After ‘Heated Altercation’

Two St. Thomas men were arrested Sunday on assault and weapons charges in connection with a heated argument April 7 during which they pointed guns at each other, the V.I. Police Department reported.

Anwar Gregory, 32, and Lavelle Campbell II, 27, who are brothers-in-law, are charged with third-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, brandishing and exhibiting or using deadly weapons, and disturbance of the peace, according to the police report. In addition, Campbell is also charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.

Gregory has been released on $25,000 bail, according to a probable cause fact sheet filed in V.I. Superior Court on Monday. Campbell’s bail was set at $50,000 and unable to post bail, he was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending an advice of rights hearing, according to the probable cause fact sheet in his case.

According to police, the argument that led to their arrests occurred in the Estate Contant area on April 7. The probable cause fact sheets describe a heated exchange during which the men pointed their guns at each other and waved them around, endangering the gathering crowd. Both were held back by their respective friends, according to the fact sheets.

Days later, the Criminal Investigation Bureau was made aware of two videos being circulated via WhatsApp messenger, involving two men with firearms during a heated altercation. The men were later identified as Gregory and Campbell, the report stated. At one point in one of the videos, Gregory’s gun can be heard clicking, as if the trigger was pressed but the firearm malfunctioned, the fact sheet stated.

The case remains under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Bureau. Anyone with information should contact 911, Detective Y. LoBlack, the Criminal Investigation Bureau or the Office of the Police Chief at 340-774-2211.
