The Caribbean Genealogy Library (CGL) explores the history of Carnival parade traditions with presentation “Old World Influences on Afro-Creole Masquerades in the Eastern Caribbean.” During his presentation, historian Dr. Robert Nicholls will explore the vernacular history of Afro-Creole masquerades in three regions: West Africa, Western Europe and the Eastern Caribbean. Based on patterns he first encountered in Nigeria, he explores the derivation of masquerade types that exist in the Caribbean, namely the raffia bush disguises, masked stilt dancers and horned masquerades. This presentation at CGL is $5; it is free for current library members.
