House Passes Spending Bill With V.I. Medicaid Money

Medicaid funding for the USVI appears safe now that the U.S. House of Representatives passed the fiscal year 2020 federal government funding bill including the money. The Senate is expected to pass it and President Donald Trump has indicated he will sign it.

Illuminated Boats Deliver Christmas Spirit in Christiansted Harbor

The Christmas spirit of forgiveness was alive at the St. Croix Boat Parade in the Christiansted harbor Saturday night, the crowd cheered as the V.I. Water and Power Authority boat cruised by the boardwalk blaring the song Electric Avenue, occasionally cutting off its lights simulating a power outage.

Cobblestones In, Parts of Main Street Reopen

Cobblestone pavers along Main Street and Post Office Square have been fully installed and the roadway is now open to vehicular traffic beginning at the entrance of Cardow, heading west towards Market Square, according to the Department of Public Works.

Bryan: Expand Cannabis Law, Send Taxes to GERS

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. has unveiled legislation broadening the territory's new medical cannabis law, with new taxes directed mostly to the failing Government Employees Retirement System, as well as new rights for Rastafarians and other changes.

HUD Allocates Territory Another $53.59 Million

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development allocated more than $2.3 billion Tuesday to support the long-term disaster recovery process in hard hit areas in 15 states and four territories. According to HUD, the U.S. Virgin Islands is getting $53.59 million of that, bringing HUD’s total USVI allocated funds to $1.92 billion.

V.I. Revenues Expected to Increase; Bryan Cautions Against Excess Spending

At this year's revenue estimating conference, Internal Revenue Bureau Director Joel Lee projected a 10 percent bump in V.I. tax revenues for fiscal year 2020, but Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. is warning against using up the hoped-for increase wastefully.

USVI Population Likely Lower As 2020 Census Ramps Up

The U.S. Census has opened offices on St. Croix and St. Thomas, as well as in each of the U.S. insular territories, in anticipation of the upcoming 2020 Census, Assistant Interior Secretary Doug Domenech said.
