St. Thomas Man Arrested on Forgery Charges

Police officers arrested a man for forgery at his residence on St. Thomas Wednesday, the V.I. Police Department reported.

On May 24, the Economic Crime Unit began investigating a case of forgery following a complaint from St. Thomas Cargo and Ship Services. The investigation uncovered that Makram Salem, a former employee of the company, had received a check for over $600. Instead of using it as intended, Salem altered the check and deposited it into his account, ultimately receiving over $5000, according to the police report.

Following a thorough investigation, an arrest warrant was obtained for 21-year-old Salem. He was arrested at his home on St. Thomas and was taken to the Richard N. Callwood Command, where he was charged with two counts of forgery, obtaining money by false pretenses, and passing forged bills or notes, the police report stated.

His bail was set at $20,000. Unable to post bail, he was processed and remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advice of rights hearing scheduled for Thursday at the Superior Court, the report stated.
