Lady Panthers, Lady Warriors, and Hurricanes Crowned Champions

Antilles School on St. Thomas held the first Interscholastic Athletic Association (IAA) volleyball tournament of the 2024 volleyball season in the territory over the weekend, welcoming 14 teams from St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix to the MCM Center.

The Antilles Junior Varsity and Junior Varsity B Volleyball Tournament featured three divisions. In the Junior Varsity Girls division, the Virgin Islands Montessori School and Peter Gruber International Academy (VIMSPGIA) defeated Antilles School in the semi-finals (26-24; 25-11). The Lady Volts then faced undefeated the Good Hope Country Day (GHCD) Panthers out of St. Croix in the division championship match. The Lady Panthers won that title match in straight sets (25-19; 25-6). Aryanna Tutein of GHCD was named the MVP.  Lindsey Allen of VIMSPGIA won the Charlie Davis Sportsmanship Award. Charlotte Amalie High School was the fourth team entered in this division.

The Junior Varsity B Girl’s Division, which highlighted middle school teams, had eight participating teams. St. Croix John H. Woodson Warriors went undefeated in Pool A. Antilles Blue team finished second in that pool. VIMSPGIA was the top team in Pool B. St. John’s Julius Sprauve School (JESS) claimed the second position in Pool B. The Lady Warriors clipped the wings of the JESS Seahawks in the first semi-final match (25-2; 25-9). Antilles Blue took the charge out of the VIMSPGIA Volts (25-21; 25-14), setting up a rematch of the tournament’s first game. Once again, the Lady Warriors withstood the Hurricanes, winning the championship match by a score of (25-14, 25-15). Woodson’s Aah-Men Belardo was the MVP, and Leah Vigilant of Antilles School won the Charlie Davis Sportsmanship Award. Antilles School entered two other teams in this division. Gifft Hill and Sts. Peter & Paul School also entered teams in the Junior Varsity B Girls bracket.

Only two teams registered for the Junior Varsity B Boys Division. Antilles School and JESS played three matches. The team with the best record was the tournament champion.  Antilles School won the first two matches, both in straight sets (25-15; 25-22) and (25-16; 25-21), respectively. However, the Seagulls found their wings in the third match and won the game (25-21; 25-14). Antilles School Hurricanes’ Shane Berry won the tournament MVP.  Jensly Jimenez of JESS won the Charlie Davis Sportsmanship Award.

The next tournament of the season will be the Antilles School Varsity Volleyball Tournament, which is scheduled for Sept. 27 – 29 at the MCM Center at Antilles School on St. Thomas.
