Everyone is invited to join the Humane Society of St. Thomas in a month-long commemoration of International Homeless Animals Day on Aug. 17, a time to bring attention to the tragedy of animal overpopulation, the agency announced. August will be highlighted with free spay and neuter clinics as well as fundraising events.
During the month of August, organizations around the world come together to raise awareness about the pet overpopulation epidemic that can be addressed by sterilization initiatives, ultimately resulting in the elimination of unwanted homeless animals, the release stated. Locally, HSSTT offers spay and neuter programs at its campus clinic, usually on a monthly basis to assist the community by fixing colony cats for caretakers free of charge.
According to Dellia Holodenschi, HSSTT Spay and Neuter Committee chair, “Community cats are perhaps the most significant and prolific source of overpopulation, but they can be controlled if responsible colony caretakers take advantage of HSSTT’s free spay and neuter assistance.” If you have stray, abandoned free-roaming community cats around your residence that you are feeding, call HSSTT at 340-775-0599.
In addition to the free clinics, HSSTT is observing this special month by inviting the community to join them at Bolongo Bay Beach Resort on Saturday, Aug. 10 for a Summer Sail and Snorkel Fun Day on the S/V Heavenly Days from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. “Your $125 donation will be used to save more lives while you will enjoy an afternoon in the company of animal lovers on a relaxing sail to Buck Island,” the release stated.
On Saturday, Aug. 17, the celebration continues with an intimate “by invitation only” dinner at a private home, and the last two Saturdays of the month, Aug. 24 and 31, will feature free adoptions of the HSSTT shelter pets.
