Liberty has closed the acquisition of mobile spectrum and prepaid customers in the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) and Puerto Rico from Dish, now EchoStar. The transaction will add over 100 MHz of spectrum that will provide increased capacity and speed and strengthen Liberty’s 5G mobile network. The company will also welcome new prepaid subscribers into its USVI customer base.
The acquisition, which was closed for $255 million, received regulatory approval in August, following a review by the United States Department of Justice Antitrust Division and the approval by the Federal Communications Commission, which noted in its approval on Aug. 9, 2024, that public interest benefits are likely to be realized as a result of the transaction, such as enhanced competition in USVI.
“This investment is another testament of the solid commitment that we have in the U.S. Virgin Islands,” said Ravindra Maywahlall, general manager of Liberty VI. “This acquisition will give us additional spectrum, which will provide our customers with an enhanced mobile experience by increasing the capacity and speed of the mobile network. It will also expand our points of sales and service across the U.S. Virgin Islands, bringing us closer to our customers.”
