Sen. Bolques Encourages Public Participation in Upcoming Hearing on Rebuilding Julius E. Sprauve School

Sen. Angel L. Bolques Jr. urges all residents of St. John to participate in the upcoming public hearing hosted by the Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) for the St. John Committee of the Virgin Islands Coastal Zone Management (CZM) Commission. The virtual hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, April 15, at 4 p.m. via Zoom.

The hearing will address Federal Consistency Determination No. CZM0006-25 concerning the reconstruction of Julius E. Sprauve School, a long-awaited project approved by FEMA. The proposed relocation and rebuilding of the school in Catherineberg (Hammer’s Farm), Cruz Bay, is a significant step toward strengthening educational infrastructure and emergency preparedness in St. John.

“We’re not just rebuilding a school, said Senator Bolques — we’re creating a space where our children can thrive, and our community can come together, especially in tough times. That’s something worth showing up for.” The new campus will be thoughtfully designed with cutting-edge classrooms, fully equipped administrative offices, a vibrant library, a welcoming cafeteria, a state-of-the-art kitchen, modern restrooms, and safe, accessible stairways, balconies, and hallways — all built to support learning, safety, and community connection. Notably, the new facility will also function as a designated hurricane shelter, providing vital support during natural disasters.

Senator Bolques emphasizes the importance of community input in shaping the island’s future: “I strongly encourage residents to attend the hearing and make their voices heard. Your participation is essential in ensuring this project reflects the needs and aspirations of St. Johnians.”
