March 20, 2008 – Ten elementary, middle and junior high school students have qualified for participation in the 2008 Territorial Geography Bee examination, which will be administered at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 4, at the Education Department's Curriculum Center, Estate Tutu, according to a press release from Acting Superintendent of the St. Thomas-St. John School District Jeanette Smith-Barry.
District Social Studies Coordinator Annie Smith said that the 10 students received accolades for their knowledge of world geography from their various schools during oral competitions, and they were administered the pretest for admission to the territorial competition.
The students and the schools they represent are: Muta Abiff of Addelita Cancryn Jr. High School; Chirag Shama of Antilles School; Kelly Brooks of Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School; Josue Martinez of Church of God Academy; Aspen D. Moore of Gifft Hill; Valekai Gumbs of Gladys A. Abraham Elementary; Shakeem E. John of Leonard Dober Elementary; Jenna Herbert of St. Croix Country Day; D'Moi A. Rouse of St. Thomas Calvary Christian Academy and Adesha Gumbs of Yvonne E. Milliner- Bowsky Elementary.
As a group, they will take the National Geographic Society Geography State Test, with each student independently completing the 60-question examination within a period of 60 minutes. Completed answer sheets will be faxed, immediately upon completion, to the NGSGB office in Washington, D.C. The student who obtains the highest score will represent the U.S. Virgin Islands in Washington, D.C. at the National Geographic Society Geography Bee Competition in May.
