Paperwork delays pushed back the start date for much-needed repair work on Centerline Road, but Public Works Commissioner Darryl Smalls said Thursday he expects it to begin by the end of October.
“I anticipate he will hit it aggressively,” Smalls said of the contractor Island Roads.
Smalls previously said he expected work to begin in September.
Smalls said he still believes the project will be done as originally indicated before the end of March.
He said the contractor has materials on hand and ready to go for the more than $1 million project, which will be paid for with federal funds.
According to Smalls, work will be initiated at the worst spot – now marked with orange barriers and has an asphalt berm around it to deflect water. Only one lane is passable.
Two other spots also need repair, but aren’t as bad as the worst one.
Smalls said no one was to blame for the paperwork delays but sometimes things just don’t move as quickly as he’d like.
Problems with the road began with Hurricane Otto in 2010 but May’s heavy rains caused the worst spot on the road to crumble more.
“It crumbles a little more with each rain,” said Coral Bay Community Council President Sharon Coldren.
