Ann Monira Smith Dies at 109

Ann Monira Smith

Ann Monira Smith, affectionately known as “Granny,” “Auntie Miley” and “Mama,” died on Dec. 9. She was 109 years old.

She is preceded in death by her parents: William and Helena “Tantie” Fahie-Smith of Josiah’s Bay, Tortola; her children: Mario “Smiley” Smith and Maggie Lettsome; siblings: Elita “Edith” Smith Gumbs, Emily Smith-Blyden, Gladys Smith-Bess, Sofrona Smith, Virginia “Gussie” Smith, Jane “Lily” Smith, Constancia “IT” Gordon, Justina Smith, Frances “Nan” Georges, Arthur Smith, Alphie Smith, Charles Smith, Zephenia Smith, Antonio “Tony” Smith and Mannie Smith; and grandchildren: Odean Smith, Don “Titus” and Dwight “Exodus” Blyden.

She is survived by her children: Joseph “Dick” Blyden, Austin and Juliet “Jule” Raymo-Shahid, Alexander Theophilus “Gold” Smith, Carolyn Patricia Smith-Ottley and Peter Gonzalez; grandchildren: Moira Monique Smith, Monica Smith-Desir, Mariska, Mario Jr. Marisha, Makia, Monae, Makeem and Maurice Smith, Khayri and Dr. Talya Shahid, Ishara, Nykila Monira Jendayi, Taj Faraji Siwatu, Lasima Tushinda M’Bilashaka and N’Kobi Gonzalez, Esther Smith, Hanna Ryan, Dennis “Shabazz” Dale “Malik,” Dean “Maha,” Dave “Kimbe” and Daryl “Leviticus” Blyden, Goldean Smith, Geraldine Smith, Ludene Smith, Uldean Smith and Janice Smith-Hodge; 43+ great-grandchildren; and 6+ great-great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by extended family and special friends: Kennth “Chico” Howard, Norwell and Clorise and family, Gregory O. George, Sgt. Sandra Colbourne, Laurie Lee Hodge, Louis “Skippy” McBean, LaVerne Wesselhoft, Christian A. Harley, Sheena Conway, Rosalia “Rosie” P. Hughes, Bernice and Roy Hodge, Audie Henneman, Ms. Pearl Hanley and Family, Earl “Iriebie” and Edith Queely, Ariel Smith, Calvin “Sheep” Benjamin, Ivy Monsanto, Leal Robinson, Donna (Bovoni), Ms. Denarise Henry (caretaker), Eugene Fahie(deceased) and family, Debra Gumbs-Gonzalez, Valmy Lily and the Gonzalez family; as well as the Foy, Fahie, Battiste, Blyden, Smith, Lettsome, Raymo and Thomas families.

The first viewing will be held from 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 3, at Blyden Memorial Chapel.

The second viewing will take place at 9-10 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 4, at Christ Church Methodist (Market Square). Interment will be at Western Cemetery No. 2.
