Oct. 21, 2003 – Water and Power Authority officials announced on Tuesday afternoon that they had disconnected electrical service to the Watergut Homes complex on Monday at the request of Watergut management so that an electrician could troubleshoot an ongoing power outage problem.
At 1:03 a.m. Sunday, WAPA line personnel responded to a call from the Fire Service to assist with a piece of electrical equipment reported to be smoking on the premises of the housing community, a WAPA release stated. The device, called a transclosure, is the housing for the Watergut Homes transformers.
WAPA personnel confirmed that the problem lay within the perimeter of the housing community. "The Watergut Homes electrical system is owned, operated and maintained by the Virgin Islands Housing Finance Authority," the release said. "WAPA is not authorized to repair that system. Watergut Homes is one of WAPA's primary fed customers, which means that WAPA's service terminates at the pothead."
Utility officials said WAPA would restore electrical service to the affected buildings "following a written request for reconnection and a Department of Planning and Natural Resources inspection."
