STRONG TURNOUT FOR NEW GIRLS SOFTBALL LEAGUE

More than 30 young women tried out Sunday afternoon at Emile Griffith Ballpark for teams in the upcoming Under-18 Junior Girl's Fastpitch Softball League.
There will be two divisions in the new league for players under 18 and those under 13 years of age. So far more than 100 girls have signed up for the league, which is slated to start in early June and run until the end of August. Each team is going to play 18 games.
The new league is sponsored by the Department of Housing, Parks and Recreation, said League Coordinator Arsenio Riveria.
"So far we have had good parental cooperation," Riveria said. "I hope to make softball a year-round event for these girls. After this summer league we plan to have another league beginning in October. This will give will give these young ladies an avenue to play more softball and improve on their skills."
The league is in need of sponsors at a cost $500 per team, Riveria said. For more information contact Riveria at 775-6435 between the hours of 2pm and 10pm, Sunday through Thursday.
