Reconstruction of Burnt-Out Complex Office Underway

April 4, 2008 – Reconstruction work on the burnt-out office in the administration building at the St. Croix Educational Complex is underway, according to St. Croix School Superintendent Gary Molloy. Arsonists torched the office of the Academic High School in February, gutting it. (See "Intentionally Set Fire Wrecks Office at Educational Complex" )
Demolition and debris removal, which was phase one, have been completed, Molloy said in a release from the Education Department Friday. The project will be completed in four phases, Molloy said. Phase two will be fire proofing.
"The District is awaiting a final analysis on the fire proofing from the territory’s sole provider Fire & Ice of St. Thoma," Molloy said. "Following the analysis and subsequent application of a fire retardant, Phase three will begin."
During phase three ducts and the air conditioning will be removed by Bengoa International of St. Croix. The final phase of the project is the reconstruction of the administration office.
“In an effort to move the project forward expeditiously, the department elected to contract the phases separately, Molloy said. Public Works developed the project scope, but Education is managing it, Molloy said.
“It is our hope to have all associated documents for the reconstruction phase completed and delivered to the Department of Property and Procurement early next week," Molloy said. With funding in place and purchase orders completed and being processed, he said he was confident work would be completed on a timely basis.
