Bumann Wins in Wind at South Shore Time Trial

Feb. 26, 2008 – The headwind was so blustery during Sunday's South Shore Time Trial, it almost seemed as if the cyclists were trying to ride out of a vacuum cleaner hose. The nine-mile race, which started at Ha'Penny Beach Road and finished at Divi Carina Bay Resort, featured long flat sections, punctuated by two climbs, the first at Mt. Fancy and the steeper Grassy Point Hill near the finish. The wind assured that no course records would be set on this day.
Robert Bumann defended his top position again in 2008. His time of 22 minutes, 43 seconds was easily the class of the field. Juancito Gario was two minutes back in second in 24:40, and Glenn Massiah was another 45 seconds adrift for third.
Sue Brown smoked the guys, again, for her second win in the Expert class. She now moves up to race the big boys in the Elite category. She was over half a minute ahead of Troy Holloway, winning in 26:06 to Holloway's 26:39. John Harper was third in 26:46.
Sport Category rider David Nowack earned his first career win, racing to a time of 29:31. Two riders tied for second in 30:09, Richard Jean-Pierre and Nelson Rojas.
Julie Sommer took home her first trophy, capturing the Women's category in 31:56. Denise Blanchette was second in 34:06 and Sarah Bostwick won bronze at 34:27.
The next race is scheduled for Sunday, March 2. Anything Goes No. 2 will start in Frederiksted at the Vincent Mason Coral Resort Pool, and then travel to the foot of Creque Dam Road. From there, riders will be free to determine their own route to the finish line at Rust op Twist. Road riders may choose to head up Mahogany Road or traverse Queen Mary Highway, while mountain bikers may opt for the climb to Scenic Road. Registration will open at 6:30 and close at 6:56, according to a press release from the Virgin Islands Cycling Federation.
